Wilma's Patio
Newport Beach, California
This place turned out to be a pleasant surprise. There were so
many variables that could have tipped the scales, making or
breaking our early lunch or late breakfast, this particular
Saturday morning. The aged facade had character, but didn't
necessarily hold promise of a good meal, and though the menu
was vast, it only proved they served many things, but did they
do many things well? With hunger pending and three kids that
needed accommodations that wouldn't intrude upon other
patrons, this was it. We sat at a table on the outdoor patio
where we could watch sidewalk traffic, or the way dining with
kids can go, sidewalk traffic can watch us. Breakfast was a "no
brainer" for the kids, eggs or anything to put maple syrup on
met their needs. My son was happy with their French Toast,
which I concurred with after sneaking a bite. My husband
combed through the menu, struggling between the trout, and
finally settling with the New Zealand Sea Bass. Because we
share our meals, I frowned upon his decision, feeling 11:30 in
the morning was a bit to early for fish as far as I was
concerned. I made it clear that I would be dining upon my own
meal this time and he could have his all to himself. His many
expressive noises of pleasure was helpful in urging me to take
a bite after a bit of coaxing. This was served with a perfect
homemade tartar sauce and a choice of cottage fries,
coleslaw, rice pilaf, fresh fruit and our particular choices;
tomato and cottage cheese. It was all so good that I found
myself constantly torn between his meal and mine, which was
the "Quiche of the Day". This particular day it was Vegetable
Quiche
which was truly wonderful. The delicate crust was filled
with roasted red peppers and onions, tender egg and melted
cheese. This one even a "real man" could love! The breakfast
menu boasts a "Benedict Gallery", using real crab in their
Crabby Benedict, offering a Garden Benedict with avocado and
tomato as well as the traditional Eggs Benedict, and several
others. Their menu offers everything from pastas, Meat Loaf
to Chicken Marsala. Though I never got my foot in the door, I'll
happily welcome another trip.
