Top o' the Cove Restaurant
La Jolla, California
Voted "Most Romantic Restaurant" for 9 years,
Top o' the Cove is quite elegant. Although we had
our reservations in the beginning with a small
menu selection we soon realized it didn't matter
how few things they offered because every one
was done to perfection. We got cozy in a corner
booth with a beautiful ocean view and started
with Soup A L'Onion topped with a Garlic Crouton
floating beneath the melted Emmenthal. We were
in complete awe of the Blackened Ahi Sashimi. At
first unimpressed by the small portion we quickly
forgave them with the first taste. What made this
Ahi different was that before they quick seared it
they rubbed in a Cajun seasoning that gave the
fish a whole new dimension. We were so happy
with our Ahi appetizer that we ordered an Ahi
entree, the Big Eye Tuna which was a larger &
thicker cut with an amazing Soy Wasabi Glaze,
and placed atop a bed of Crispy Fried Swiss Chard
that was unlike anything I'd ever tasted in the
vegetable world. It was addicting! This entree is
usually only served at dinner time. Their "Special
of the Day" was the deeply flavored Wild Boar Fan
Sliced with Port Wine & Blackberry Reduction
.
This was similar to pork tenderloin, topped with a
sauce of pan juices, sweet wine and fresh
blackberries scattered about and served
alongside whipped potatoes. Finally we pushed
our limits by sharing a dessert, and we were glad
for it, ordering the lightest of desserts, a Crispy
Baked Meringue Cup filled with Irish Cream
Custard and topped with Blackberries
set in a
Blackberry sauce. We've added this dessert to
our list of favorites! The prices are a bit
extravagant for lunch with the Big Eye Tuna $32,
the Wild Boar $22 and our dessert $8, but I wasn't
complaining, I certainly got my money's worth!
Our compliments to the Chef, Guy Sockrider!
