While walking around Old Town and looking over menu's before
deciding where to dine, we walked into one where the waitress sat in a chair waiting with discourage for customers. As we decided to move on and check out the Swing Inn Cafe she whispered, "The food there is really good, and cheaper too." Surprised by her disloyalty we headed on over. Certainly the place wasn't fancy when we walked in, but my friend feeling pleased said, "I love places like these." I knew what she meant. It was in dire need of some major updating, but it's dated look added lots of character. No wonder, it's been around since 1927. We "ooo'd" and "ahhh'd" passing the pie case, which, except for the fruit pies, we were told were all made on the premises. On the weathered breakfast counter was a glass covered plate with a generously frosted Danish lying defenselessly. Lone diners who probably called the waitress by name also sat here, holding up their empty coffee mugs for a refill. The wood paneling was worn and the carpet beyond it's life span leaving us to feel unspoiled settling into a brass studded and still shiny, red leather booth. The menu was unpretentious, offering standard fare; BLT's, Chili Size and "Breakfast All Day". I was very pleased with my Chicken Salad Sandwich, and though the Onion Rings weren't on the delicate side, I appreciated them as much as any of the ranchers they were designed for. My sandwich was so generous with filling that after I'd finished half, plus all the onion rings I decided to pack the other half to-go. Trouble was I'd planned to do some shopping and leaving it in a hot car all day wasn't a good idea. Still it was too good to throw away, so I carried it shop to shop. Interestingly, two of the three shops we visited, employees were eating sandwiches from white Styrofoam boxes, we couldn't help, but ask, "is that from the Swing Inn Cafe?" Sure enough, and one lady said you can't get in for breakfast on a Saturday or Sunday with less than an hour wait. Evidently they are most popular for their Biscuits & Gravy for ninety-nine cents and Steak & Eggs. Unanimously this was the most talked about restaurant in Old Town Temecula.
