For those of us over 40 this restaurant serves up food that brings back
childhood memories. The one in Tyler Mall is a great place for people watching, while the another in Palm Springs is just as nostalgic with an electric train which runs above diners. Cokes are flavored with lemon, vanilla, chocolate or cherry syrups, while sandwiches and fried sides come in wax paper lined baskets. Their BLT Sandwich seemed unusual on a hamburger bun, but was awesome accommodating much more filling. The fries were thin cut, tender and enjoyable especially dipped in a side of their chunky bleu cheese dressing. The Halibut Fillet Sandwich was also good on a soft bun, with a breaded halibut fillet, lettuce, tomato and tartar sauce, this gets pretty sloppy though. The French Fries are cut thin and fried tender and go well dipped in a side of their chunky Bleu Cheese Dressing. The Ruby Rings are medium cut, lightly breaded onion rings that go extremely well with a sprinkle of salt or dipped in their great honey mustard dressing. If it's too stressful choosing between the two order their Frings offer a combination of both. The Albacore Melt, with Swiss and American cheeses came on grilled sourdough bread which was too thick, I liked better the Albacore Salad Sandwich which was unusually good on grilled raisin nut bread. The Fish Tacos, served in flour tortillas had far too much cabbage, carrots, cheese, and tomatoes, and the tangy tomatillo sauce didn't help things either. Here you'll find 15 different burgers to choose from, all offered with your choice of 1/3 pound USDA beef, turkey or veggie patty. I like mine the good old fashioned way and the Ruby Cheeseburger fits the bill. Surprisingly my 12-year old son, normally a burger fanatic liked their Vegetable Wrap more than their burger. This had avocado, cucumber, green onion, herbed 3-bean salad and melted cheese. He suggests a side of Ranch Dressing for dipping rather than the salsa and sour cream that they serve it with. Ruby's Chili and New England Clam Chowder can be ordered in a sourdough bread bowl. On the dinner menu you'll find old fashioned meals such as Roast Turkey & Stuffing Dinner, Shrimp & Chips, Fresh Baked Turkey Pot Pie, Meatloaf and Chicken Fried Steak. Breakfast selections include, Spinach Florentine Benedict, Top Sirloin Benedict with sauteed mushrooms and traditional Eggs Benedict, Huevos Rancheros, Egg Sandwich, Egg Burrito, Ruby's Original Malted Waffles, Banana Pecan Pancakes, Cinnamon Roll French Toast and an array of Omelettes. Old fashioned desserts include Double Hot Fudge Brownie Sundae, Banana Split, Fresh Baked Apple Pie and 14 different Shakes & Malt flavors to choose from, served in parfait glasses and accompanied by a metal container keeping the other half of your shake cold. Prices are great here, with something for every pocket book.
