Rubio's made a name for themselves years ago with their
fish tacos. Who would have thought a fish taco would have caught on to this extent? Now you find them in nearly every Mexican restaurant. From what I can tell, Rubio's seems to be a big hit with the public. Goodness knows they are always busy. Though the fish sometimes sits around too long to qualify for fresh and the meats are low end, the results taste better and are healthier than the big fast food chains. Carnitas Street Tacos for $1 is a bargain. Though they are small, only a couple a three bites, they have good flavor. The shrimp in the new Coconut Shrimp Tacos had no flavor by themselves, but stuffed into a tortilla with it's spicy mango sauce and cabbage and they were pretty tasty. Hands down, the Baja-Style Fish Taco is far better than the Grilled Fish Taco which has always been so fishy every time I've ordered it. As far as the rest of Rubio's menu goes, the Cheese Quesadilla was good as was the Chop House Chicken Salad, but the Carne Asada Taco and the Grilled Chicken Taco lacked in flavor, and the hyped up Lobster Burrito was a joke, there were so many beans that it was hard to find any lobster, which didn't have much flavor anyway. Why anybody would mix lobster and beans together in the first place is beyond me. For sides, the beans are a bit peppery, but the rice is sticky and tender, and best of all is the salsa bar with four to choose from including salsa verde and a chipotle salsa. Rubio's has been hit or miss for me, and on this latest trip I've concluded it's not too bad for cheap fast food. I can't say it tastes authentic as they claim, but wash it all down with a Corona and I could pretend!
