Parker's Lighthouse
Long Beach, California
Sitting sturdy as a beacon on the peninsula of Shoreline Village, is
Parker's Lighthouse. Passersby can't help, but admire this noble
structure, harboring patrons till their appetites are vanquished.
It's trim interior reflects maritime character throughout. Metal
railed staircases spirals three stories up to the crowning glory, a
towering round room with a 360 degree view, which includes the
majestic Queen Mary. In the center of this uppermost room sits
the bar, leaving the coveted edges to the patrons. Although
sitting in the bar left us with a limited menu, as we saw it, it was
the best seat in the house. Throughout conversation, I stole
away glances at the appealing architecture, especially the domed
ceiling of white planked wood that rose high above our table.
Even the food was a pleasure starting with the impressive,
Parker's Burger was a half-pound of Angus Beef topped with
Swiss cheese, grilled onions and sauteed mushrooms, dripping
with pleasure. Of the three top name restaurants we dined in
over the weekend the creamy New England Style Clam Chowder
here was the best. The manilla clams in Parker's Steamers were
also tasty, served with drawn butter, but pricey at $16.95,
especially considering we still had to spend another $4.95 for an
order of their excellent Garlic Cheese Bread to soak up the
delicious broth. The Crab & Spinach Dip was a bit bland, but the
grilled crostini they served it with successfully redeem this dip.
My favorite appetizer though was the Calamari, golden fried and
served with an addicting remoulade that was good for dipping
practically anything in. Even their specialty drink, The Blue Whale
is delivered with a large souvenir whale chomping on the rim of
your glass! What's not to like about this place?
