Lover's Cove
Catalina Island gets thousand of visitors every day. So many come
and go with a day trip and think they've seen it. You haven't seen
this Island until you venture below the water's surface.

There are plenty of "tours" available, ready to make a big deal of
the underwater experience. Diving can be extremely intimidating
for the novice, but Lover's Cove is just the place for those who are
willing to take the plunge.

A short walk up Pebbly Beach Road which passes by the Catalina
Express terminal leads to Lover's Cove, a protected marine
reserve. Glass bottom boats and submarines tour these undersea
gardens. Though this preserve is heavily protected, snorkeling is
permitted. Nothing is to be removed or disturbed, only admired.

There is no need to invest a fortune to participate, snorkeling gear
is available for rent alongside the road. A short flight of concrete
steps lead to the rocky beach, at low tide. Dozens of enthusiasts
and curiosity seekers float above the surface with attentions
diverted below. Though timid waves can be a bit of a nuisance for
those trying to peek under while working up their courage, the
water is clear and the creatures friendly once you're out there.

I highly recommend bringing a bag of koi food which you can
purchase at a pet shop on the mainland or a bag of frozen peas at
the island market. This attracts more fish than you can imagine.
Hundreds of Kelp Bass and Garibaldi swim under and around you,
hardly alarmed when you pet them. This many fish all at once can
be a bit overwhelming at first, but you quickly realize they're
harmless. Venture out further where more timid creatures such as
the sea anemone, starfish and moray eel reside.

It's thrilling, relaxing and fascinating all at once, a perfect activity
for adults and children and one of the of the most unforgettable
experiences on Catalina Island.

Note: The nearest bathroom is at the Catalina Express terminal.
