La Pinata
Indio, California
I don't know why, but going to the River the last two times means
getting stuck in Indio. We are getting to know that town far too well.
All would have been lost stranded out here the first time on my
husband's 30th birthday if it weren't for this place. They provided us
with a most memorable meal. They make a mean margarita, boy, one
does the trick! My husband successfully consoled himself over a plate
of Carnitas. Their Enchilada's Old Fashioned filled with cheese and
onions were topped with a dark sweet & smokey sauce. We had to
come back the next day for another order before leaving town. It was
that day that we discovered their Shrimp Cocktail. Although the
shrimps were tiny, it was the tomato juice based sauce with a hint of
smoke that was so unusual and refreshing. They topped it with
avocado slices and served it with crackers and lemon wedges. Their
Ceviche Tostado was good enough, but doesn't compare to the shrimp
cocktail. The complimentary chips they serve with their salsa were a
bit too thick and wearing on the teeth. And I suggest passing on the
Halibut Taco which was sparse and dry. The Chile Rellano now was
hearty and generous with cheese, and would also make a great
burrito. Another thing I like about this place is the decor. It's not only
lively and authentic, but clean. We drove through the town, looked
through the phone book and even inquired with a locals about other
good places to eat in Indio, evidently this is the place. They serve a
weekday buffet from 11:30 to 2:00pm for $5.95 that looked wonderful.
They also have entertainment in the evenings on the weekends.
