Hotel Laguna
Laguna Beach, California
Hotel Laguna is the most well known structure in the area, over 100 years
old. The original structure burned to the ground 60 days after opening and
was rebuilt in 1888. After the depression a Mr. Yoch joined two hotels
together at it's present site on Laguna Avenue and Coast Highway. It was
highly successful and played host to many dignitaries. In 1928 the hotel
was demolished on speculation that the structure's materials were a fire
hazard and a new hotel was finished and dedicated in 1930 and is the Hotel
Laguna we know today. We booked a stay here based on the photo above,
I love old buildings. The deal clincher was their private beach complete
with food and cocktail service, sounded like our kind of vacation! We
stayed on the first floor, room #135, which we were happy enough with
since our rate was killer at $144 with our AAA discount, anywhere else I
checked was outrageous. The decor was uneventful with a nylon bedspread
and white swap meet lamps and furniture, but our view of the town and
ocean more than compensated for it. A guy on the beach said he was
staying on the second floor which is being remodeled and his room was
very nice, furnished with antiques and such. The private beach was a roped
off area and the beach service on a Saturday was not meeting the needs of
their guests, with only one waitress. I hope they were just understaffed
that day. Still, we loved not having to pack towels, find parking and
struggle to enjoy time on the beach. Instead we walked downstairs, were
escorted to our lounge chairs and towels were laid out for us. We were
content basking in the sun, enjoying the sounds of the surf and sipping Pina
Coladas. We had such a fun time here. Right outside the lobby doors is the
heart of Laguna and we walked everywhere we went. The hotel offers room
service and has two restaurants. The Terrace Cafe is an open air patio just
above the beach, offering casual dining with a spectacular ocean view.
Clae's is upscale with an enclosed panoramic ocean view, offering seafood
and Prime aged steaks. Check-in at the hotel is at 3:00 and check-out is
12:00 noon. They do have complimentary valet parking for overnight
guests. Room rates range from a basic Village View Room for $85
weekday/$110 weekend and the Mini-Suite with Garden/Ocean View $175
weekday/$250 weekend, without the AAA discount. If you don't have AAA
go to www.lagunabeach.com for discount rates. You can't beat those
prices for such a great location in such a high-class town. We'll come here
again.
