Horton Grand Hotel
San Diego, California
The Horton Grand Hotel lobby.
Located in the heart of San Diego's Gaslamp District is
The Horton Grand Hotel. It is the restoration of two
separate hotels, built in two separate locations in 1886.
One was the Grand Horton, a replica of the elegant
Innsbruck Inn in Vienna, Austria, built by a German
immigrant. The other had a Victorian cowboy flair,
called the Brooklyn-Kahle Saddlery Hotel where Wyatt
Earp lived most of the seven years that he resided in
San Diego. In the late 1970's both hotels were
scheduled for demolition and purchased from the City
of San Diego for $1 each. The hotels were carefully
dismantled and painstakingly rebuilt brick by brick as
one, reopening in 1986 as The Grand Horton Hotel. The
100 year old Grand Hotel staircase was shipped to
Austria and restored at the cost of over $200,000! This
historical Victorian hotel has 132 guest rooms,
including 24 suites. Each room is uniquely decorated
with antique queen size beds and hand carved armoires
and cozy gas fireplaces. Some rooms have balconies
with views and all rooms have air conditioning, no two
are alike. We stayed in room #436 which was a light
and airy room with mint green walls. It had a balcony
overlooking the courtyard and the bathroom still had a
pull-chain toilet! The bathtub in this room was a bit too
small for any romance, but it was a pretty room. Their
award winning restaurant, Ida Bailey's, named after
the districts most famous and classiest madams, offers
room service as well as a spectacular Sunday Brunch
and Saturday afternoon High Tea and Afternoon Tea. I
must warn you though that in the late 1980's this hotel
received a certain notoriety, apparently haunted by at
least one, and possibly several ghosts. The most
famous of them being Roger Whitaker, a gambler in the
1800's who's debts finally caught up with him. He hid in
the armoire of his room thinking he would be safe from
the men who were hunting him down, but was found
and shot. Some say that Roger still resides in this
room, #309.

Such a beautiful nook
in the bedroom.
I loved the marble and
old pull-chain toilet in
the bathroom.
