Honolulu Harry's
Corona, California
The front dining area off
of the lounge.
I hadn't heard about this place until watching a local television show which
reviews restaurants in the Inland Empire. The Island cuisine looked and
sounded wonderful, and the bold statement the longtime host for Let's
Dine Out, Allen Borgen, made about the sweet potato appetizer, saying, "it
was worth flying in for", was a further kick in the rear that got me here
within the week. The Hawaiian ambiance starts before you enter with
flaming torches welcoming guest in. Once inside your eye is drawn to a
floor to ceiling Hawaiian beach scene that covers a wall in the tiki-style bar
while the sound of the trickling water streaming across it makes a tropical
drink seem even more appealing. There was plenty of Hawaiian print
fabrics, hula dancer lamps and bamboo accents for a vacation feel, but the
family oriented clientele erased any notion of pretentiousness. The food
was fabulous, starting with the highly touted Outrigger Sweet Potato Stack
which, alone, made the trip worthwhile. It'll make a sweet potato lover
out of anyone. Thick sweet potato slices are coated with coconut and a
mixture of parmesan cheese and, my guess, brown sugar, deep fried and
served crispy, speared onto skewers, and assembled to resemble the sails
of a ship. The Chipotle Ranch Dipping Sauce they pair this with left me in
awe of this appetizer. Macadamia Nut Halibut fillets were laid on Wasabi
Mashed Potatoes, topped with a Tahitian Vanilla Bean Sauce that was
sweet enough to top ice cream, a bit too sweet for my taste. The Panioli
Skirt Steak
was more like it! I'm not a big meat lover, but marinade
penetrates all the way through this steak for 72 hours and left me
impressed. It's reminiscent of teriyaki, but deeper in flavor. This was
served on a cast iron skillet, upon grilled onions and topped with
shoestring onion rings. The Hawaiian Pulled Pork Sandwich accompanied
with sweet Hawaiian rolls came with a choice of two sauces, we chose the
BBQ sauce made with Coconut Rum, anise and ginger, another hit! This
was garnished with the same delicious Carrot Ginger Slaw that
accompanied many of their dishes. Finally, the Macadamia Nut
Cheesecake
on a coconut crust, topped with macadamia nuts and caramel
could easily satisfy a sweet tooth as well as other gooey creations, even
one that looks like molten lava flowing from a chocolate volcano. Honolulu
Harry's is a great place to vacation for dinner!
