Rarely does a course grab me as
beautiful, interesting and "cozy" (almost serene). Voted in the top ten for "Best Golf Courses in San Diego County", Pala Mesa Resort's 4-star, 72-par Championship Golf Course is one such place. Just 15 minutes south of Temecula, just outside the little (what was the name of that place) town of Fallbrook, you would miss it if you weren't looking for it.
I don't know how many times I've
driven past this place on the way to San Diego, but I never would have guessed there was a golf course situated just off the 15 Freeway here. Even if you're looking you can't see it, but it's just a hop, skip and an off-ramp away. Yet, it's not one of those "freeway" courses. When I say "cozy and serene", I mean it! What a beautiful place! Nestled amongst numerous oaks with colorful bridges, the course meanders through like a walking trail. Every hole looks different and not one was boring. I love this place! It's well taken care of and tee to green, hole to hole, very consistent. A few advantages - Four par fives to "get back that stroke", pin placements are indicated on score cards, and they even have those nifty GPS carts! Throw in a wonderful restaurant and lounge, comfortable lodging, tennis, a nice pool area... and I've got a couple weekends to clear up in the next six months!
Highly recommended!

Golf on weekends is $85 per person which includes a cart.
Twilight rates, after 1:00 p.m., is $39 during the week and $49 on weekends, Super Twilight is after 3:00 p.m. and is $29 any day of the week. Now that's a bargain! The "Stay & Play Package" is really worthwhile. Sunday through Thursday it's only $119 per person for two days of golf and includes a one night stay (double occupancy), Friday through Sunday it's $139 per person. A room alone costs $149 for a Saturday night, so the two days of unlimited golf would only be an additional $65 per person! You can't beat that!

Though I've never considered
San Jacinto as a golfing destination, the area, with its neighboring City of Hemet, do provide a few choices. It may seem out of the way and inconvenient for some, but it's a nice get away. The area is bordered by the San Jacinto mountain range which makes for some nice scenery. This time we tried the Soboba Springs Royal Vista Golf Course. This is an established course with numerous trees and various water hazards, but most holes have fairly open fairways with some a little more constricting. The course was in beautiful shape and is well maintained with a variety of greens, though none were especially challenging nor fast. Though there are a few water hazards they rarely pose a threat as they tend to run along a side.
Currently fees are $49 on the
weekend ($29 after 12:30), and $40 during the week ($23 after 12:30).
You can reach them at (909)
654-9354 for reservations and directions. Their address is 1020 Soboba Road, San Jacinto, CA 92583. |
