Martha Green has established herself as a prominent member of
Redlands, with her bakery, Dough'lectable's, providing the town with
fresh baked breads and pastries for years. She elevated her status to
even greater heights, attaching a small restaurant at the back of her
bakery, and the Eating Room has since become one of the best place in
town for breakfast or lunch. I love the different colored walls, the
corridor a golden mustard, the reception area a vivid red, and the
dining room lime green, which took me back at first, but the bright
orange and brick walls help tone it down. Still it's a quaint place with a
whimsical "back on the farm" feel. Her fancy for roosters fit right in
here with so many to admire. I couldn't help, but smile looking up into
the orange tree we sat under. They offer a bargain priced Rustic Tea
and is certainly a treat, relaxing with a pot of hot tea and nibbling on
finger sandwiches, cookies, scones with Devonshire cream and jam
and various other goodies. Though coming here is always a delight, it
sometimes requires a bit of patience getting a table, since it's crowded
at peak lunch hours. It's the only place in town, that I know of, that
serves breakfast in the afternoon, and they dish up some good stuff.
The menu changes with a Spring-Summer menu offering refreshing
drinks, crisp salads and cold sandwiches, while the Fall-Winter menu
has hot pies, quiche, soups and a variety of hot sandwiches. Many
items, thankfully, are firmly planted, such as the Bananas, Raspberries
& Cream
, a homey bowl of fruit swimming in semi-whipped cream,
definitely farm food and one of our favorites. Another is the amazing
Sinful French Toast, a decadent combination of croissants, cream,
eggs, maple syrup, cream cheese and vanilla, baked together and
served hot from the oven in a small glass casserole dish. It certainly
lives up to it's name, and doubles as a most wonderful bread pudding!
Admittedly I've had better Eggs Benedict, and claim to have the best
Biscuits & Gravy in town, which I'm inclined to believe it, since every
time I come here they're sold out. At lunch, they have so many
tempting ways to help us get down a daily dose of greens, with many
different salads to choose from. One is topped with chicken, candied
pecans and green onions, while another has tortilla chips, cheddar and
jack cheeses, cottage cheese and salsa, and more even choices to be
made topping them; with Cranberry Vinaigrette, Oriental Vinaigrette,
Poppy Seed, Caesar, Bleu Cheese, Ranch, Thousand Island, Italian and
Nik's Special Dressing. Sandwiches are far above the ordinary
assembled on fresh baked breads, some are traditional and some
funky, but all are enjoyable. Though JR's Smoked Chicken, Brie &
Grilled Tomato Sandwich
was on the dry side and the Tuna Melt too
gooey and messy, it's the Classic Reuben with corned beef, sauerkraut
and 1000 Island on Marbled rye and Martha's Pulled Pork Sandwich on
a soft roll, simple with mayonnaise, that will nag at me to come back.
Their light and addicting Onion Ring, which are dredged in flour, rather
than batter, are a perfect side for either of these awesome
sandwiches. If onions aren't your thing, the Broccoli Salad is a healthy
alternative, with raw broccoli florets tossed in a creamy sweet
dressing with fresh corn and bacon. I have to say, it's the only time
I've ever enjoyed raw broccoli, and often order some to take home. I
prefer their Great Caesar Wrap stuffed with romaine lettuce, chicken,
croutons, shredded parmesan cheese and a creamy garlic dressing is
wrapped in a tender tortilla, to the Asian Wrap with teriyaki chicken,
curried cream cheese, pineapple, wontons and cashews served with a
honey mustard dipping sauce, and there's a Veggie Wrap and a
Southwestern Chicken Wrap still left to try. As if there weren't enough
to please, practically, anyone for lunch they make their own soups too,
my little one can't forget the Corn Chowder, while I enjoyed a bowl of
Carrot Soup, all of which can be ordered in a homemade sourdough
bread bowl! After your meal you'll find it near torture leaving without
taking something home from the bakery. I highly recommend the
Chocolate Eclairs, oh the filling! I get lots of these and freeze them at
home. Once defrosted they're still perfect. Another favorite of mine is
their Olive Tappenade. Be sure to buy a bag of their water crackers,
it's a great pairing. Their Jalapeno Cheese Bread is best sliced,
buttered and fried till golden. The cheese throughout melts and pairs
will with soup, salad or Mexican food. Redlands is such a beautiful
town and it's places like this that give it so much character.
Great job Martha!
