Duane's
Prime Steak & Seafood Restaurant
Riverside, California
The main dining room
It's a word I scarcely use, but there's no denying the Historic Mission Inn
Hotel is magnificent. It's grandeur is unforgettable with three uniquely
different restaurants to dine in. One glimpse from the lobby of the
stately Civil War painting, so richly framed in gold that hangs as the
focal point in Duane's main dining room, and you know you're in for
some serious dining here. The service is impeccable with waiters clad in
white coats and black bow ties, respectful and ready to cater to your
every whim. Serving only USDA Prime cut meats, Duane's is the only
AAA Four-Diamond awarded restaurant in the Inland Empire. This is the
highest rating a restaurant can receive and Duane's has received this
rating every year since 1996. Duane's also recently received several
awards from the Southern California Restaurant Writers, including the
Golden Scepter given to only 19 others in Southern California. Though
they are noted for their meats, seafood and pasta are still superb. I've
been here several times, and have been so enticed with their starters,
that I've found it difficult to save room for entrees. There's just no
denying the Lobster Bisque which is absolutely excellent, poured table
side over a dollop of creme fraiche and sauteed shiitakes. This is so
generous and quite satisfying, hardly leaving room for much else, but
there's no stopping now! The appetizers are designed with quality in
mind, rather than quantity, so sharing leaves only a taste, and
especially so with the Beef Carpaccio which was wonderful,
complimented with a scant condiment of whole grain mustard seeds and
pink peppercorns, that went brilliantly. The Ahi Carpaccio was a bit
plainer with unnecessary bits of bell peppers and a sauce that was
barely detectable, and though the same pesky bell peppers seemed a
bit awkward mixed into delicate Crab Cakes, the wonderful Lobster
Sauce redeemed this appetizer. The Lobster Roll with a Honey Ginger
Vinaigrette is generous with large chunks of lobster, served along side a
delicious wilted julienne vegetable salad. Salads are so good here you
wont feel cheated passing up the richer fare. Seared Rare Ahi Salad is
sesame crusted and set upon greens with oven dried tomatoes and a
Ginger Soy Vinaigrette. The Dungeness Crab Avocado piles high two
avocado halves high with crab, set on mixed greens with a wonderful
Honey Citrus Dressing, an excellent salad. At dinner, sides are chosen
separately and not included in the price of the entree. Considering this
the bill can really add up. Trust me, an addicting loaf of their
complimentary Rustic Bread fills any void. Ordering a steak was
certainly surprising, as it nearly overlapped the plate. It's carnivore
heaven here! As for me, I'll leave the meat and potatoes to the boys,
ordering instead the Swordfish. It was a bit overcooked, but the buttery
Stone Ground Mustard Sauce that topped it went beautifully and was
appropriately paired with wonderful Garlic Mashed Potatoes. The hand
made Spinach Ravioli was just as good topped with a Pesto Cream, diced
Roma tomatoes and toasted pine nuts. I don't think one can go wrong
here. There are many lovely ways to end a meal here. The Creme
Brulee
was perfect, while Duane's Signature Dessert was fantastic with
creme brulee wrapped in a crepe and set on the plate with sauteed
bananas, vanilla ice cream and a warm Meyers Rum sauce, wow! It's
hard to find much fault here. This place is high class all the way!

Prices are extremely high here, but absolutely warranted for the
ambiance, service and top notch food. Lobster Bisque is $7.50, Lobster
Roll $15.50, Dungeness Crab Salad $18, Swordfish $22, Spinach Ravioli
$17.50, Farm Raised Breast of Chicken with Shiitakes $20, Filet Mignon
with Jumbo Gulf Shrimp $38, 16-ounce Lobster Tail $50 and Duane's
Signature Dessert is $7.50.
