Descanso Beach Club

Catalina Island is one of the most
unique places in California.
Surprisingly it hasn't changed too
much over the years. I've been
here dozens of times and never tire
of the place. Some of my fondest
childhood memories were captured
on this picturesque island. Anxious
to give my children the opportunity
to experience this wonderful place,
I planned our trip carefully. There
was certainly enough to keep us
busy for five days, but I looked
forward most to a day at Descanso
Beach. Though it sounds exclusive
this"club" is open to the public. I
suppose it's a bit exclusive, if you
can't pay the $1.50 per adult
charge for beach access. To some
it is an outrage, but I rather prefer
the discourage of crowds. With
paid admittance one can take
advantage of waitress service, with
drinks and food delivered on the
beach. The day is easily spent here
playing volleyball, snorkeling, or
kayaking, but for those who need
to unwind , socializing, a blanket on
the green listening to live music or
a massage may be just what the
doctor ordered. Me, I looked
forward most to settling into a
beach chair with a Mai Tai in hand.
There was going to be no
mistaking, I was on vacation! The
outdoor restaurant has two open
brick barbecues, umbrella covered
tables and plenty of seating around
the bar. No matter where you
choose to plant yourself, a relaxing
view of the cove is enjoyed by all.
Come to their "Beach Party" Friday
through Sunday evenings and bring
your own meat, the club provides
condiments, sides and salad. This
communal experience, barbecuing
your own meat alongside other
beach "goers" is a unique
experience. The food at their
restaurant left nothing to complain
about that day, except the rocky
beach. The top part of the beach is
sandy, but nearing the water it
hurts to walk in bare feet, so be
sure to bring water shoes.
Additionally, the Descanso Beach
Club offers outdoor showers,
changing rooms and restrooms.
They rent kayaks, snorkeling gear,
umbrellas and beach chairs. Oh,
how I long to come back, and
believe me I will. It's about the
next best thing to Club Med!
