You can't help, but notice this cute little place off the side of the main
road of Joshua Tree. It's so tiny, with only 7 tables and counter space with stools for about a half dozen loners. That's probably why the writing on the side of the building encourages "food to-go". Unfortunately the interior hasn't taken on the same character that the outside eluded to, but the close quarters and various sized squares of poster board, informing patrons of various "specials" with colored markers, almost seemed something out of a movie. You know the part where the out of towner walks through the door and the place gets quiet while the fearless waitress asks him, "What'll ya have?" It's tiny alright. Though everything here is not homemade, it's apparent that the things that are, are keeping them in business, that and the cheap prices. You can get a cup of Grits for a mere $1.75 or splurge on their most expensive dish, the New York Steak with Mashed Potatoes, vegetables and Garlic Bread for $8.45. The very limited kitchen space, leaves no room for a deep fryer, so you wont find french fries, onion rings and such, serving instead sides like potato salad, coleslaw, salad, soup, chips, home fries or hash browns. Surprisingly, the Coleslaw impressed me far more than the Roast Beef Sandwich which I ordered it with. The slaw was plenty moist with fresh crunchy cabbage and an appealing sweetness. I don't usually care for cole slaw, but I ate the whole bowl! My sister liked their Fried Eggs & Ham Sandwich, but I personally wouldn't have ordered it on wheat. I was puzzled when they asked if we wanted any salsa, which in my opinion didn't go with anything we ordered, but my sister was game, pouring it on her hash browns. One bite and I found myself buying a pint to take home. I am in such absolute awe of their Homemade Salsa which had enough spice, but was so unusually sweet, it's addicting. I'm sure customers thoughtfully order, just to have an excuse to indulge in this stuff. They are open at 6:30 serving breakfast all day long and closing at 4:00 p.m. The food is simple and old fashioned with everything from Chocolate Pancakes, Country Fried Steak with Eggs or Mashed Potatoes, Grilled Liver & Onions, Corned Beef Hash or Ham, Biscuits & Gravy, to a Chili Size with Cheese & Onions. I'm personally coming back for their Peanut Chicken Salad which I passed at another table on my way out. It looked better than it sounded with finely shredded cabbage, chicken and crunchy wonton strips. Even if I'm not looking for a meal, this is a mandatory stop for another pint of that amazing salsa!
