Captain's Anchorage
Big Bear, California
If you ask the locals where's a good place to eat in Big Bear,
they're likely to say Captain's Anchorage. My husband even
expressed how he has loved coming here over the years and
was anxious to take me. This dark and cozy place is definitely
appreciated most in the cold winter months, when they stoke
up the fireplaces. It's an old-timer sort of place. The menu is
pretty basic with a variety of steaks and seafood combinations.
We ordered something fancy called The Anchor which was a
char-broiled filet mignon stuffed with dungeness crab and
topped with artichoke hearts and fresh tomato, then smothered
in Bearnaise sauce, nah! Stick with what they do best, the
meat and potato dishes. I couldn't stop eating their Salad Bar
which offered three homemade dressings that were to die for, I
especially liked the Italian dressing which had a slight
sweetness, one of the best I've had. They also offered a cold
crab & shell pasta salad that was really good. I had three
helpings! I didn't care for the Crab Cakes served with a Chipotle
Chile Mayo which tasted more like tuna, and was too bready.
The spicy Clam Chowder was a disappointment as well as the
Vegetable Soup which had far too much celery, though my
husband liked it. We ate our fair share of the complimentary
homemade rolls. Silly as it seems, I was thrilled to get to eat
my meal with a three-pronged fork, it all seems so much
fancier. I'd come back just for the ambiance and the salad bar.
If you have a fancy pallet I wouldn't recommend this place, but
for the good ol' boys, this place is great!
