Built in the 1963, the Caliente Tropics
Resort has had it's up's and downs. This motor lodge originally attracted the likes of Elvis Presley, Nancy Sinatra and even the Rat Pack. It took a dive in the 1980's from lack of pride, money and a general disinterest in the town, leaving it to the "Spring Breakers" who trashed the place. For a while almost every room was uninhabitable and the clientele was undesirable. It was finally rescued in 2000 by Ken Gimes, and now four million, plus, dollars later it's resumed it's icon status in Palm Springs. Tiki followers flock here from all over the United States for The Hukilau, the biggest luau in the East with carvers, vendors, Polynesian music and an overflow of rum. The Reef Tiki Bar provides tropical drinks, weekend entertainment and hosts some of the biggest parties around. Pets who travel with their people are welcomed upon arrival with a clean throw, a bed, bowls and doggie treats. The day starts by the pool which opens at 7:30 a.m. offering continental breakfast. This pool became the site of the Miss Hawaiian Tropics Pageant, grossing the Reef a whopping $250,000 a year. The rooms are clean with island decor, wall air conditioning units, refrigerator and safe. The newer remodeled rooms on the south side have coffee pots. Though there is a restaurant, La Casita on the premises, there is no room service. This resort is equipped to accommodate mostly singles and couples with only 6 units offering 2-double beds. Rooms rates start at $85 in the summer months for their standard King Deluxe while a one of their four suite can cost up to $275 during the more desirable weekends of the year. Let them know ahead of time if you are bringing your pet and ask about any year-round specials that might be offered when booking your room, such as "Buy 2 Nights and Get the 3rd Free", "Half-Price Sundays" and "Room, Sightseeing & Golf Packages", all are based on availability.
