Calico Ghost Town
Yermo, California
Nestled in a quiet canyon lies an abandoned mining
town. Founded in 1881, people settled here to seek
a share of a fortune in silver. The population at it's
peak was around 5000 and now is only 9, which, in
itself, is amazing to me that anyone lives out here.
Much of the town has been restored by Knott's Berry
Farm founder, Walter Knott, who bought Calico in
1951. Visit Calico's Odessa Railroad for a scenic ride
and a mini-tour of some of the town's history. All of
the mines have been boarded up, but you can still go
down into part of Maggie's Mine, which has been
altered for public safety. Take a walk down the
wooden streets for a bit of shopping in the old shops
or enjoy a meal at the Calico House Restaurant. The
kids loved panning for "Fools Gold" which is free, and
there are scheduled shoot-outs between the bandits
and Calico's Sheriff. And don't miss the Mystery
Shack which has some fun optical illusions. Before
leaving visit the cemetery where some of Calico's
residences are buried. It's best to plan a leisure day
in the cooler months, cause July was very dry and
miserable. Pick up a "walking tour" pamphlet from
the Lane House at the start of your visit. Consider
planning your trip during on of Calicos annual events
such as Christmas in Calico, Calico Heritage Fest,
Calico Ghost Haunt and Calico Days.
