Here the ski lift takes my kids to
the top of the bobsled racers.
It doesn't look steep, but they can
really pick up some speed.

Alpine Slide
Big Bear Lake, California
With the screwy weather we've been having
over the last few years, it's been ridiculous for
us to plan a trip with the kids to the snow. We
planned a trip last January, bought snow
clothes for all three of them, only to store
them away till this year. Determined to get
the kids up there before they outgrew the
clothes I had invested in, we ended up in the
same position as last year, with no snow in
the forecast. We came up to the mountains
anyways, but on our way out of town we
stopped at the Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain,
where the kids spent the day, all toasty warm,
slipping and sliding down the hill on inner
tubes. Not only did they provide the
convenience of man-made snow, but a
conveyor belt to transport everyone up the
hill. Before leaving we had to try out their
Alpine bobsled slide, that went surprisingly
faster than I'd expected. It was such fun that
we all went down a second time, which was
about all we could afford the five of us.
Besides innertubing down the hill and the
bobsleds, they had a very miniature golf
course, the smallest I've ever seen, there
were also go cart racers which we didn't get a
chance to try. Though sunny California
squelched my visions of snowball fights and a
big friendly snowman, this place fooled us for
a while, and was the highlight of our weekend.

Bear Boulevard in Big Bear Lake.
