808
Las Vegas, Nevada
The view from our booth.
It was our last day in Vegas when we stopped off at Caesar's
Palace to cash in our Keno card. As I was walking through the
casino I saw a delicious looking ad with a picture of, what looked
like a layered seafood stack, I just had to try it before leaving
town. The restaurant was darkly lit with mood lighting in clever
places. I had no apprehension with such a clean atmosphere and
an open kitchen with chefs donned in white. It's decor was
simple, yet striking with a framed metal sculpture of a school of
fish and live bamboo throughout. Evidentally the creator of 808
studied in Europe, learning culinary secrets of the french yet
appreciating the native cuisine of the islands after living there for
years. At 808 he's meshed the two styles, serving up "Euro-
Pacific Cuisine". The first order of business, once we were settled
in a comfy booth, was to get a taste of what had lured us in, the
Deconstructed Ahi Roll. This attractive stack was layered with ahi
tartar, avocado salad, crab ceviche and rice set on a wild truffle
dressing, and was definitely worth stopping for. After placing our
order they brought a complimentary basket of kalamata olive and
rustica bread and soon after, two complimentary sushi handrolls
which are different every night, but on our visit it was seared
mahi mahi and I was impressed. Our intention was to leave after
this, but now we were excited to see what else they could do. So
we ordered the Australian Snow Crab Cake which was another hit
with three delicate cakes leaning on a pile of crisp Jicama Salad
with spicy remoulade. We just couldn't stop, so at the waiter's
recommendation we ordered up the Duck & Crab Lumpia a
glorified eggroll stuffed with duck and crab, no fillers, cut on the
bias and stacked elegantly on pool of orange ginger glaze and
mashed avocado. This was quite a generous appetizer. At this
point my husband called it quits. I pushed my luck with the
Chilled Pea Soup which was poured around a crab salad filled
pastry which initially exploded with flavor in my mouth, but the
lack of cream soon bored me, still it was an impressive healthy
dish. By now I was excited to have found a new favorite place,
but frustrated that we hadn't discovered it five days earlier. To
seal the deal, while we were waiting for our bill they brought a
complimentary tier of homemade miniature sweets. This will
definitely be a highly anticipated visit next time out to Vegas, I
can't wait to try out some of their entrees. Oh, and by the way, I
struggled and struggled to figure out where the "808" came from,
turns out it's Hawaii's area code So there you have it!
Prices for our three appetizers were $14 and $16 at dinner.
