It was a waitress who had recommended the Dragon House to us,
bragging about their creative sushi chef. I was skeptical, unable to
imagine fresh fish being plentiful so far from the ocean, but we came
anyway on our way out of town. It wasn't what we'd expected with
it's location in the Walmart shopping center. The inside wasn't
anything special either, with a small sushi bar at the entrance and
simple tables and chairs otherwise. We'd wanted to sit at the sushi
bar, which only accommodated a few, but without a vacancy we
chose a table near the window. The air cooler seemed to barely keep
things comfortable. The waitress, knowing this, urged us to move to
a table under a ceiling fan which was an improvement. The menu
was surprising offering Chinese food as well as sushi. I'd never seen
that before. We'd come here for sushi, so without further ado we
promptly ordered up a few rolls, before looking over the menu. I was
happy to see they could make Walnut Shrimp and couldn't resist an
order. We all love the dish. Theirs had large shrimps in a creamy
honey sauce, but was sparse on the walnuts. Nevertheless, we were
all impressed, especially our kids who moaned and groaned boldly
stating it was the best shrimp they'd ever had. The rolls came
starting with the 49er Roll filled with tempura shrimp and topped with
avocado and chopped onion. Unfortunately this didn't have much
flavor. The eel was a bit undetectable in both the Caterpillar Roll and
the Kamakazi Roll which had spicy tuna inside and eel on top. Though
the Rainbow Roll was topped with a colorful assortment of seafood
and avocado, it had an unexpected, mysterious center, that I wasn't
prepared for. Surprisingly this was my teenage son's favorite. The
rolls were off balance with more rice than filling. It was after their
highly touted sushi chef, Bobby visited our table with a surprise
offering of a small cut roll filled with cream cheese, a blanched
asparagus spear and topped with salmon that I realize sitting at the
sushi bar would have been a better choice for a sushi experience.
This was our favorite of the rolls we had tried, and now I wanted
more. He seems better able to cater to customers as he gets to
know them. I was regretful that we didn't have more time to give
this place a better chance, it all seemed to have so much potential.
